A New Nature Reserve for South East London.
The Buckthorne Cutting Nature Reserve is Lewisham’s most recent nature reserve along the New Cross to Forest Hill green corridor. The cutting joins three existing reserves that together help preserve and protect this very important stretch of urban rail-side habitat. In Lewisham Borough there are only three green spaces that are designated as Sites of Importance to Nature Conservation (SINC) that have Metropolitan as well as borough significance, the others being Blackheath and Beckenham Place Park. The cutting is home to slow worms, stag beetles, a tawny owl and a host of other birds, mammals and a wide variety of native trees including oaks and sweet chestnuts.
